University Teaching at Taiyuan University of Technology – TYUT

Oh my gosh! I did something that was never on my list of things to do, but I am so glad I did it.

I was a University Instructor at TYUT for two weeks this summer. I taught ‘Conversational English’ to University Freshmen for two weeks. Week A (I had 56 students) was one group of students and Week B (I had 54 students) was another group of students. I have never wanted to teach college students, but I am so glad that I did this. It stretched me for sure, but I was able to see what I am capable of doing!

From short readings, to Old English Poetry, Ted Talks, music talk, discussions around technology, reading science based articles, discussing ‘favorites’, and debating  conversational issues we found a variety of topics to use as discussion starters. One of the most interesting topics was a debate on whether or not bamboo should be used to build houses. This isn’t a topic I would have found on my own, but my students did lots of research and really enjoyed debating. Some of the debates were really heated and we had to stop them!

The purpose of this class was to give students an opportunity to be taught by a native English speaker and practice using English at length. Chinese students (even at the university level) don’t often have the opportunity to use their English and be corrected when unsure of the language. At the end of the week students had to give a 60-90 second speech about any topic that we discussed during the week or something that greatly interested them. I was very proud of the care and attention to detail the class put into their speeches!

THANK YOU JANE! I had the most amazing TA- Jane. She was a dream to work with. Extremely professional, kind, and helpful. She did her job extremely well and really wanted to learn from the experience. I am glad that we were matched together for this summer teaching course. I can tell from my two weeks with her that she really wants to excel in what she does. And who doesn’t want to do that??? She was a beautiful reminder to me that I should always be in a position where I am teachable and can learn from others.

Students had a 5 hour school day. We were in class from 8:30-11:30 – break from 11:30-2:30 – and finished the day 2:30-4:30 – Teachers had a feed back session from 4:45-5:30 to discuss what worked and didn’t work in your classroom and how to be the most effective in the days to come. Each hour of the day we focused on different topics to lead our discussions.

Also while in the Shanxi Province my friends and I happened upon a African Drumming Studio! We were able to take a class! It was such a great experience.

Our instructor Styve was so great and told us all about his home country, Benin!

The two weeks I spent in Taiyuan were great. My students expressed how thankful they were for me coming to teach them and we all learned from each other. I would definitely consider doing this again.
