After the Quarantine – Weeks 3&4

The sad truth of life is that racism/discrimination against others exists everywhere. It turns my stomach that any one person feels that their worth is so much better than someone else’s that they will exert control, power, and various social tactics in such a way to demean, humiliate and treat others in a derogatory way.

My last post touched on the very real issues that are happening in China, specifically in Guangzhou. Since that post a few weeks ago things have calmed down, but nothing is perfect. The government is working to handle any issue of discrimination or racism (because China is big on “saving face” and not looking bad), but this isn’t to say that things still aren’t happening. Foreigners be they African, Black American, or brown skinned individuals are all aware of what is happening, and all know to be very cautious when out and about.

As I have said before, I live in Shanghai and from what I have seen in Shanghai, foreigners (meaning all expats) have had discriminatory measures (not allowed in spas, hotels, certain restaurants, and local tourist venues)  placed on them, not just those foreigners who – *ahem* look like me.

So, what’s happening now? Shanghai is vibrant, busy, and feels like things are “normal again”. We still have temperature checks when we enter stores/local venues, and we have to show a green health code (via an APP that is used here in China) to show that we are healthy. Local attractions are requiring individuals to make reservations before coming and they can regulate the number of people (locals and expats are required to make reservations) who enter in. Many places still have reduced hours, so they are not open all day, but most places are open.

We had a holiday this week, Labor Day OR May Holiday is a holiday celebrated here in China on May 1 celebrates the workers of the country and you are given time off from work. The weather was lovely this weekend- Saturday it hit 90 degrees and today Sunday we had a high of 82 degrees. Parks have lots of people (even temp checks to enter parks), sports bars are busy, many restaurants are celebrating Cinco De Mayo here, brunches are all over the city, and local tourist attractions are open (with prior reservations and temp/health checks to enter). I did try to go hiking this week and the park was closed. That was a bummer because it was a long trip …. But “C’est La Vie” ….

How am I feeling about my time in China? This is where I am living right now. the borders are still closed and currently there are no flights out. The last one-way flight I saw out of china was about $7000.00 USD with a layover of +18 hours….. Never Would I Ever take this flight in my life. So, I am here. I can’t leave the city of Shanghai without the risk of being quarantined when I return, and I do not want 14-day isolated quarantine at all. I know SIP sucks …. I know it does, but SIP is nothing like isolated quarantine here in China. From what I see on the news, and all over various social media sites, many Americans are more so concerned with their personal freedoms than the effect that being out can have on society at large. What I do know is that, China, as strict as it is, did a good job of containing the virus. I know. I know. It all started here ……

.

.

.

.

.

Yeah were past that now. It happened. It sucks – Its everywhere and we have to deal with it and move forward.  What happened next (for us in China) after COVID19 hit ??? Serious quarantine! None of this protesting and arguing and complaining. Stay inside your home and seriously only come out for necessities. The amount of in person – social distancing- meet ups I have seen – oh my gosh! And everyone isn’t social distancing – so that’s another story for another day.

BUT QUARANTINE??? NO ONE LIKED IT. NOT ONE PERSON. It’s not fun. It’s not vacation. I see the numbers continuously rising back at home and I do feel that I am better off here, RIGHT NOW, than back at home. I do hope that Americans will realize how serious this is. Opening the country back up so that you can go to the mall or eat out with your friends isn’t worth risking sickness, your life/health, or the worst yet- death.

Someone asked me what do I suggest as their state loosens up SIP and allows re-opening.

1: Stay at home – you don’t have to go out just because its allowed

2: When/If you go out avoid large crowds

3: Plan ahead and be effective. Get as many things as you can with as few trips as possible out

4: Always wear your mask. I hate wearing my mask too. I really do, but I wear it daily.

5: Keep your sanitizer and wipes with you.

6: Keep your immune system strong – take daily multivitamins/eat foods/fruits/vegetables to get your vitamins in

7: Drinks lots of water

8: Rest when you can

9: Take walks when you can (safely of course). If lots of people are out plan your walks when it’s not so busy outside

10: BE SAFE AND MAKE SMART DECISIONS. We are all adults and know what’s smart and what’s not so smart. Even though many people feel the need to go out and about just because they can it doesn’t mean that you have to do the same.

I still currently don’t have a start date for physical return to school though some schools in China have returned to the classroom. We are teaching online – and I’m learning lots of new skills because of this. I miss the classroom for sure, but until we return online it is.

I am staying cautious and aware of everything that is happening around me. I am following the news locally (in China is my local) and at home (USA). I love this skin I’m in and I know by virtue of this skin whether its right or wrong I am often looked at and treated differently. I do my best to treat others fairly and as they deserve. I do my best to be kind, helpful, and offer a smile when needed. It is in my nature and comes as a result of my upbringing. May we all be safe, kind, and helpful to others in these difficult-trying-and crazy days were in.

.

.

.

.

.until next time. Paz.

Lessons from MS. K (3)

LESSONS FROM MS. K! Hey Yall! It’s Ms. K here ….

I am so happy to share that my Teachers Pay Teachers  (TPT)-

https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Store/Karla-Gurley

store is up! TPT is an online resources that teachers, educators, parents, individuals use to find a wide variety of worksheets and resources. I am slowly (it’s been taking a long time just because of my connection strength) uploading lots of resources. Some are free and some have a fee. I would love it if you hit “follow me” on my store page. You will be able to see what resources I have and get updates when new worksheets are uploaded.

I do hope that this SAH (School At Home) time is going well for you. I am not calling this home schooling because that is a real thing that people do and it is to be taken seriously. Your learner is at home and they are doing school at home. I am sure that is difficult to find the balance between your work life, your students school life, your family life, and your personal life. WOW! So many things to balance. Take it easy and do what you can during this process. Find ways to include learning and education and make it as enjoyable as possible.

I am still teaching online. It’s going well and I do feel that over the course of the past 3 months (Feb, March, April) because we have been at this for last 12 weeks, my lessons have drastically improved. They were not the best in the beginning and I am okay with admitting that. This has been a learning process for schools, administrators, teachers, parents, families, support staff, everyone!

Take what you can from this time. LEARN when you can. REST when you can. READ when you can. JOURNAL about how you feel. Its all important and it all matters.

Also:

If you have NETFLIX- scroll through…. Netlfix has added Leap Frog Letter Factory, Phonics, and Numberland! I hope this is helpful for you.

After The Quarantine – Weeks 1&2

After The Quarantine – Weeks 1&2

My last post was on March 27 so its been about two weeks since then and everyday is an adventure for sure. I definitely feel like I have survived the quarantine and now I am just living life #AfterTheQuarantine

Shanghai is sloooooooooowly making its way back to normal, or a new normal. Teachers are not back in school yet, though some schools have start dates coming at the end of April, but many other professionals are back to work.

Restaurants are open. Stores and malls are open. The metro is running. There are still temperature checks before entering places and we still need to wear masks when we are out and about. It feels like things are back to normal, but there is still much work to be done. And a lot of that work is in the area of racism and xenophobia.

Living in China has given foreigners and expats new experiences, new opportunities, the chance to be students and teachers on an international level, and the chance to live and travel while abroad. Many of us love it and at the same time many of us expats in China have some awful experiences.

Currently Africans in China are dealing with awful racism and xenophobia and its awful. They are being targeted because there is a thought, they could be the ones spreading coronavirus. Individuals who are here legally are forcibly being removed from their homes, some are being re-quarantined, and many are homeless. They are being retested and given extra tests. People are cold, hungry, and living outside of their homes. It’s all awful. This is all happening in the Guangdong Province of China, in Guangzhou. Individuals I know who live there are scared, they aren’t leaving their homes, and they are having very limited movements. THIS IS REAL.

Africans are being targeted. This is very true. There was a sign at a McDonald’s that said they wouldn’t serve any “Africans or anyone who looked like a black” for the safety and health of others. This is wrong on so many levels. On an international-business level China wants to of course show that they have good relationships with Africa/Africans. On a personal, day to day-social level – it is very different. The racism is real. The discrimination is real. It is done right to your face.

I’m safe. I have been the entire time this pandemic has been happening and I have been thankful for that. My movements aren’t limited, and I have been able to access supermarkets, banks, malls, and restaurants. I haven’t experienced what is happening in Guangzhou in Shanghai (and it doesn’t mean that it couldn’t happen here), but I feel deeply for everyone who is dealing with this. I just wanted to share this information that you may not normally see or read about. It is real. It is happening. It is not okay.

May we all take what is happening very seriously. Stay inside. Order what you can and only go out when it is a necessity. The world is sick, and the world needs to heal. My faith has kept me rooted and grounded this entire time, but what’s happening now angers me.

I’m sharing a few articles of some things that are happening here in China. Though I have not experienced this myself I know it’s happening, and I know that its real. It breaks my heart that this is a current reality. I hope the links to these articles works for you. If not you can do some Google searching.

I am very thankful that through all of this the expat community here has been able to support the individuals who have been targeted and displaced from their homes. This is all sad, it angers me, and I wish people would just be better. But, sometimes, humans, are very awful and disappointing.

Surviving The Virus – Week 6

WOW! I am 6 full weeks into this but it feels like so many more.

What this has taught me if nothing else is that we need to do a better job on checking on people. We are looking out for friends, family members, and neighbors now because its a crisis – but we need to look out for people more. We have the time. We do. If you think you don’t have the time ask Alexa or SIRI to remind you to stop by a friend or family members house to see how they are doing. Use this time as a bookmark in life to not forget those around you. I hope that you are able to take this time. To work on yourself, and enjoy the moments you get to spend with your family and the ones you love.

If you live alone like me be intentional about reaching out to others. It is okay to be HONEST about where you are in life. Tell people that you need them. They need you too. Technology has made it easy for us to stay connected. Take advantage of the technology that is at your fingertips. You can video chat, text, message, call, email, send faxes, share books, do all kinds of things from your phone, tablet, or even computer … DO IT! Our phones make more than calls – they MAKE MAGIC HAPPEN. Be The Magic that you need in your own life. Be your own hero in this chapter of your story. You can do it!

The Good …. The Bad … The Ugly

The Good

  • I am healthy and I have been the entire time
  • I have a green health QR code. We use QR codes for everything there and we have an app we use where we get our health code. If you are going to be out and about in the city you need to have a green QR code.
  • I am still wearing a mask when I go out
  • No one took my temp today when I went out. I’m a little nervous about this but I guess the government/the city is slowly easing up on everything.
  • Shanghai is slowly coming back to normal. I have seen more people out this past week then in the last 5. That’s a good sign.
  • I was able to finish a book! Finally. What are y’all reading? ANYTHING GOOD?
  • I have tried new recipes
  • I have been able to workout – I have even tried yoga and I don’t think its the most amazing thing ever but its not the worst thing ever either
  • Green QR Code friends and myself are getting out together and its the best thing ever
  • The weather has been nice about 91% of the time and I try to take advantage of that as much as possible!
  • So many education sites have made their resources available free of charge. Just google away and you can probably find what you’re looking for. A previous post of mine gave lots of sites with resources (https://wordpress.com/post/kmarietakesshanghai.wordpress.com/1081) –          Titled: Lessons From Ms. K (2) Oh NO! School Is Closed. What Do I Do???
  • A ton of museums have made virtual tours available.
  • People are getting creative with staying connected while social distancing. Virtual Happy Hour with friends! Teachers reading to kids online. Family Zoom and FaceTime calls. This is all great.
  • IG (AKA Instagram) is full of celebrities giving live shows for free and DJ’s are doing the same! It’s amazing
  • This social distancing/working from home is giving you more time with your family. Enjoy it.
  • All the things on your calendar have to wait and YOU are the focus. GIVE YOURSELF the attention that you deserve.

The Bad

  • We just don’t know! Unknown. Unprecedented. Strange. Bizarre. Scary. These are words I hear every day to describe what people are experiencing. What the world is experiencing. When we describe things like this it is hard to make a plan of action for responding to it. I don’t know how to make a plan of action so I have been taking life day by day. I have been back in Shanghai since 2/01 so today makes 55 days experiencing all this. What a journey it has been.
  • You have to deal with you! All of You. And this can be bad. And Real. And Hard. And Difficult – but very needed. Do It! And reach out to others as you are dealing with the hard parts of yourself.
  • This is a hard time. Everyone is experiencing and responding to this in different ways and with a myriad of emotions. The best thing I can think to all of this is feel everything you are feeling, write, journal, cry, sing, laugh, take a walk, play – deal with your HARD. … we can do HARD things. We Can.

The Ugly

  • There is no timeline on all of this … indefinite is just that… indefinite – but I can see light at the end of the tunnel
  • A lot … and I do mean a lot of people have died because of COVID-19 so I hope that people around the world are taking this seriously
  • The world is experiencing a horrible time. It makes me think of moments in history that have been remembered like The Great Depression, we will definitely remember this time. I am on the other end of this. We are slowly going back to the life knew about three months ago but it will take a long time to fully be 100% again. I don’t know how long that will take. I just don’t. No one does really.
  • I have lost (they haven’t died) a lot of friends because of this. I know that the expat life is temporary, but a lot of people I have become close to have moved back to their home country because of this for a number of reasons. Community is very important to me.

Oh My WOW! There is so much more good than bad. I get it the bad is real. It is very real for me knowing that some of my friends won’t/can’t return to China. That part is hard and this week it really hit me hard when I knew they just wouldn’t be coming back. That this was no longer just an extended holiday but that they wouldn’t be returning at all. This whole ordeal has changed lives completely. And that is something that we have to continue to deal with every single day.

I meant to post this a few days ago. The week has been busy. I have been resting and taking care of KMG. That has been needed and important.

This city has been very quiet – its busy again. Not as busy as it usually is but busy again. Lots of people are out and things are slowly going back to normal. I am still e-teaching right now and I don’t know how long that will last either. One day at a time. ONE. DAY. AT. A. TIME. That’s all any of us can do really. So do that. Take it all one day at a time.

Life is different right now. We all have very new normals. Kids are at home who are usually at school. Parents are at home who are usually at work. Businesses, stores, and restaurants are closed. Social Distancing is happening around the world.

Nothing is stopping me from praying and believing in faithfulness of God. I am still living by grace daily and my faith continues to keep me strong.

Stay well. Stay Healthy. Take a Nap. Have a glass of wine. Do some yoga. Whatever it is that works for you. Do That!

…. i love this song …. enjoy!!!

Spotlight: Sev Wraps

Hi Everyone! I am so excited to share an interview with a really amazing person. She is one of my favorites. She is a creative and entrepreneur and she is- Katherine Gurley!!! I am looking forward to you getting to know about her and what she does.
I’ve added middle initials since we are both “KG”…read and enjoy!

KMG: Please give us a little background information about yourself:
KAG: My name is Katherine but I go by many names. Kathy or Kat works. I’m 31 and I was born and raised in East Palo Alto, California, but I am currently living in Dallas Texas. I am a Spanish teacher by day and HEADWRAP LADY by night!
KMG: Thanks for that introduction! now lets more about you being a Headwrap lady! That sounds so interesting.
KAG: Oh! It is. I love it.
KMG: How do you seek out opportunities to share your work?
KAG: I like to participate as a vendor for local events. I am also always looking online for promotion and marketing opportunities.
KMG: What are you the most passionate about?
KAG: I am most passionate about my self growth and bridging the gap in our community through my Brand.
KMG: What are you most proud of in your life?
KAG: I am most proud of my willingness to continue to live even in times I felt like I did not want to. I have made great strides in bettering my attitude, my mental and my physical health. I am proud that I cared enough to not let myself drown.
KMG: You know that is awesome. Please know that. We need to care about ourselves. So many people can relate to that. Thanks for being open and sharing this.
KAG: No problem at all.
KMG: I know that you are a creative and an entrepreneur! Which is so cool! Can you share with us what got you started with what you are doing.
KAG: Of course. I am the Owner and Creator of SeventhGold (www.seventhgold.com) SeventhGold is my brand that showcases everything awesome I do outside of teaching. When I’m not giving the melanin babies Spanish magic, I am a photographer, graphic designer, journalist and seamstress. SévWraps is my custom-made headwrap company and the reason I have something to look forward to each day.
Shortly after my father passed away, I found that turning back to old hobbies gave me a sense of relief from mourning; that even included cooking and art. One day, I picked up a needle and thread for the first time in over fifteen years. It was like present me went in a time machine! I was reminded of my strength, my creativity and through his passing, I feel I was finally recognizing my true purpose.
KMG: That’s wonderful. I am so glad that you found relief from mourning. There are so many people who struggle with this. Something great was birthed from something painful. Ha! Much like childbirth. Your company is blessed.
KMG: Now I just a few more questions for you:
KMG:  I would like to know why do you do what you do?
KAG: Understanding and recognizing my Hebrew roots has given me a new understanding of self love and identity. SévWraps is a gift I’m able to share, all while making women feel even more beautiful in the process.
KMG: Every woman wants to feel beautiful so I salute you. Thank you for being a part of that.
KMG: What is the message you want to share with the world through your product?
KAG: I want the world to know that there IS beauty in modesty. We should not be defined by how we look, but by who we are. The question is how to express this – and there are many ways to show yourself through your Crown! Who are you when you rock your SévWrap?
In simple words, fashion is a form of clothing or accessory that can be worn by anyone. What’s most interesting to me, as an Owner, is how it relates by culture.
These are Crowns of resistance. They are proudly and publicly worn, reinstating cultural and spiritual significance.
KMG: So vital for today. So fitting for this month that celebrates women.
KMG: How does living in Texas impact your work? Do you think where you live has an impact on your work at all?
KAG: Living in Texas has had more of a positive impact on my work because the opportunities and the location itself has opened many doors for the expanding of my Brand.
KMG: Can anyone wear your product?
KAG: SévWraps is where Queens come to create their own crowns. I specialize in custom-made headwraps; however, I also offer other fashionable items including women’s bow ties and body wraps. Our Na’Arah wraps are made for young girls and our Men’s line will debut soon.
KMG: Can you share with us what the best part about being an entrepreneur is?
KAG: The best part about being an entrepreneur is being able to look back on the growth of my company and now my everything was put into it. I have something I can always call MY own.
KMG: Please share who you look up to as an artist? Who are your biggest influences?
KAG: As cliche as it sounds, I look up to and am most influenced by my mother. She taught me the skills I have to be where I am today in SévWraps. Besides that, she gives me passion and motivation to want to be successful because I am the continuation of her legacy.
KMG: I don’t think that is cliche at all. I find that rather beautiful. My heart is smiling!
KMG: If you could work with any creative or entrepreneur who would it be?
KAG: I would love to work with Angela Bassett, Taraji P Henson and Lupita Nyong’o and have them wear one of my SévWraps on the red carpet.
KMG: Oh My Gosh! Lupita!! Angela!!! Taraji!!! I wanna be there. I promise I wont geek out. Okay maybe I will.
KMG: Can you please share where/how your products can be purchased.
KAG: Our product is essentially designed by you, but made by us. First, you choose a pattern (the cut out in which the wrap is made), then you select your favorite styles, (the fabrics you have to choose from).
You can check the website seventhgold.com/swatches to view what’s available. Also patterns and swatches are updated daily on Instagram (@sevwraps) — *check highlights for quick and easy access.
KMG:Are you on social media? Please share how we can follow you!
KAG: Yes!
Facebook: facebook.com/thesevwraps
Instagram: sevwraps
Finally – if you can share any words of wisdom with the world about life – what would it be ….
AS LONG AS YOU DON’T GIVE UP ON YOU, IT DOES NOT MATTER WHAT ANYONE ELSE DOES! Infuse your life with actions that build and benefit your future. When is the last time you stared into the soul of your reflection and felt powerful? Positive affirmations matter. While life remains unpredictable, we must comprehend the severity of knowing one’s self; understanding the natural power we are given through free will; aka control. Do what you may with it, but remember, what is exerted will ultimately be received.
Stand strong and remain confident in who you are.
Thanks for joining us on the blog! I wish you all the success and joy in your career!

…Brace Yourselves

WOW! I know the world feels like its each day is being written by a fourth grader in their creative writing class and we just don’t know what to expect next. It feels like everyday we are presented with something new and it can be very overwhelming. Shelves of the supermarket are empty. Toilet paper is sold out. Schools are closing. Social Distancing is happening.

I wanted to share some words from a fellow Shanghai expat. I read her words and though that they could be very helpful for others. Read and take it easy ….

Dear US: Brace Yourselves,
My name is Kelley and I live in China.  I had been there for over four years when the virus hit.  I’m here to share with you some advice because I have watched tons of people go through the same thing you’re about to go through.
What can you do?
Go to the store while staying as far from other people as you can.  Buy enough food for about two weeks or a month to avoid having to go out a lot.  Don’t buy more because it cleans out stores and makes it so your friends cannot eat. That’s rude.
Bring it home.  Peel off all clothing and throw it in the washer and spray down your shoes with 75% proof alcohol spray.  A shower is a good idea.  It’s also a great idea to clean your house from top to bottom as if you had three kids with a stomach bug.  It kills time and keeps you occupied as well.  Now you can relax.
Next step, sit on your couch for a long time.  It could be a few weeks.  It could be a few months.  But please do it if you at all have the privilege and ability to do so.  Do some online fitness classes.  Take up knitting.  Read some books.  I know it’s hard and I know it’s sad to give up the plans you’ve made.  However, if each person spreads the virus to one person a day after 14 days you have more than 15,000 individuals with this disease. Just take your calculator and start with one, push x2 a bunch of times to see.  (The disease travels faster that 1:1 by the way.)
To deal with loneliness call your friends.  We used to use phones for that.  Skype is cool too.  If you want to have a party Zoom is a good platform for bigger meetings.  Friends in China meet on certain days to laugh and drink wine together and not freak out.  Stay in the house.  Take this stuff seriously.
Other than that, please, please try to avoid the feeling of panic.  It happens. Uncertainty is incredibly unnerving. Don’t let it win.  There will be a lot of unknown.  But time will figure all this out.  In about two months, we’ll know a lot more.  Now is the time to create alternative ways to deal with the situations we’re used to.  One thing that I have learned about Americans as I’ve taught in China is that we are wildly creative.  More than many societies.  We CAN do this.
Last but not least, please stop denying what is going on.  This is not the flu.  It doesn’t only kill old people.  Our health care systems are not equipped for what is coming.  It will reach capacity and then become overrun. This will bring us to our knees.  Italy is already coding the patients that are coming in as to whether they expect them to live or die and treats them accordingly.  Heartbreaking, but true.  China built a new 1,000 bed hospital in ten days and it still wasn’t enough.  If Shanghai can empty it’s streets of 25 million people, you can too.  Please stay ahead of the curve.  Stay at home and wash your hands.
**I AM NOT A DOCTOR.  I am giving you an account of what I saw go down in China during our crisis.  The US had its first case in mid January and by the end of February, just 14.  Now, as of March 12, 2020 at 10:50 GT there have been 1336 cases.
If you want some good info on the virus you can check out my page.  [www.traversethisearth.com]

Feel free to check out her blog at: http://www.traversethisearth.com

I agree with so much of what Kelley had to say. Please take these words to heart.

During this time where it feels like the world is turned upside down focus on the things that you can control. There are so many things that are beyond our control.

Focus on what you CAN do:

  • You can keep a positive attitude
  • You can take a social media break. A 24 hour break wont hurt anything and all of social networking sites will still be there in a day.
  • You can turn off the news! The news is going non stop and it can be exhausting.
  • You can be creative at home. Think about all those things you never completed on your to do list and do them now.
  • You can spend time with your husband/kids/family/roommate. Find the beauty in this time that you are given with your family.
  • You can learn a new language
  • You can find at home workouts
  • You can read that book that has been on your reading list for the last two years.
  • You can start a podcast/vlog/blog
  • You can rest- We can all use more rest!

Take it easy to all my blog followers around the world…. It will get better. I am hopeful.

Black And Abroad: Alondra

Hey All! I am so excited to have my friend Alondra share about her experience living in China. Read & enjoy!

Let’s do a quick introduction:
KG: Can you please share your name, where are you from, and how long have you been in China? I am
AR: My name is Alondra Rena, I am  from Georgia, and I have been in China for 8 months by way of Atlanta, Georgia.
KG: Are you single, married, have any children?
AR: I am single with no kids
KG: Would you ever consider moving back to America or to another country?
AR: Another country,  not back to America.
KG: A lot of people are curious about this so I can’t wait to hear your response. What brought you to Asia- more specifically China?
AR: I have wanted to live in Singapore since I studied about it in 10th grade.  I never thought about China though when the opportunity presented itself,  I knew that it would be a way to do what I love,  in a completely different environment,  where I could learn about the people and the culture while learning more about myself…  and that is it close enough to the place I have always wanted to live.
KG: Alondra that all sounds fantastic! Everyone has such different experiences and reasons for moving and living in China. I really that hope you enjoy being in China.
Now we have a little background information about you lets dig a little deeper!
Breaking and Crushing:
KG: In your opinion what do you think are some of the biggest stereotypes we (generally speaking though I know you don’t speak for everyone) face as people of color living abroad here in China?
AR: Not sure.
KG: Okay, no worries. Thanks for your honest response. Let’s keep going.
KG: I would love to know what are some of the biggest challenges you have faced living here?
AR: Learning the language though it is not a huge challenge because I study body language as a part of the art of speaking and analyzing different audiences to convey my points in a relatable and appropriate manner. I remember when I first arrived,  having the issue of ordering food.  So I would say that was one of the major challenges for me being that I don’t eat certain things.
KG: Great. This is all so interesting. Next, how do you think we (Black Americans) are crushing stereotypes- if we are at all?
AR: Sure, I can answer that. One stereotype that we are crushing is that black people don’t travel and another is that we are hard to work with.
KG: Well I can definitely say that we are travelers and that we are not all hard to work with, so I am glad that you are able to show this to people outside of America.
KG: Knowing what you know now- about life in China and being here as long as you have been here, would you still have moved here knowing what you know now? I know I am glad that I came.
AR: Yes indeed,  sooner.
KG: Oh wow. Sooner?! That’s so cool! I love your spirit and outlook on life. Just a few more questions and we will be finished soon.
#LIC  Let’s talk a little about Life in China! There are definitely some positives about being here.
KG: What are three things you like about living in China (if you can think of three).
AR: I can think if more than 3. Here you go- I like the feeling of safety that I get here. I like how I am treated because at this point,  if I am not treated correctly,  I am ignorant to it.  I don’t understand when I am being talked about, negatively.  So being here has taught me that some forms of ignorance actually is bliss.  I have to say,  since I have been here,  people have been kind,  helpful,  and welcoming.  You run into a few things but nothing in comparison to what I have had plenty of training in,  in America.
KG: That’s all great. I know I can agree with many of those things. It’s nice to hear that people have been kind and so welcoming to you here. I know moving to Asia that is really needed.  Thanks for those responses.
KG: I would love to know what you do for fun with your free time?
AR: I like to read,  cook,  sing, dance,  run,  hang out with different people,  try different foods (within my diet),  travel,  and explore.
KG: Ahhh! You like to keep busy!
KG: Has it been hard for you to meet people and make friends here?
AR: I don’t really meet strangers though I don’t really call people friends very easily. There are people that I love getting to know and there are some I can just see when I see. So,  no.  Meeting people is not a struggle at all for me,  even here in China.
KG: What do you do for work here in China?
AR: I am a teacher though my background is in Teaching,  Speaking,  Acting and Makeup artistry in Film and TV.
KG: Makeup? Film? TV? Speaking? Acting? Teaching? You’re a ‘Jill of All Trades” – this must be what is meant by, BLACK GIRL MAGIC! Continue to shine.
Food- Food makes the world go round!
KG: I know that I love to eat and when I first moved here it was really tough for me. Can you please share how your food journey has been here? Has it been a hard transition from home to here?
AR: My food journey has been a big one.  I can cook whatever I miss from America,  give or take a few dishes.  When I first arrived,  I got really sick because my body had to adjust,  which was a great thing because I do look and feel better and I believe some of that has to do with not eating so many processed foods (as much as I was eating anyway) and being more active.
KG: Cool! Glad your body is adjusting well. Have you tried anything here that you love that you don’t have at home?
AR: I am at home.
KG: I love that you say you are at home. Nice!
AR: I love bubble drinks though I think they have them back in the States, but  I didn’t experience them until I moved here.
KG: That’s great that you tried something here and really enjoy it. Bubble drinks on me next time you’re in Shanghai!
AR: DEAL!
KG: Have you tried anything here that you absolutely hate and hope to never eat again?
AR: No,  because there are things that I won’t try.
KG: I can definitely understand that. I know there are lots things that I wont try too.
KG: How is shopping for food here for you? Do you spend a lot buying food or eating out?
AR: Both.  I do both here.  Eat out and shop for food and I don’t really spend a lot of money in either.
KG: Great! Teach me your budgeting ways…
Access to travel- A lot of people move abroad because of the access to travel to other countries. Let’s talk about this!
KG: Alondra, I have learn in my time here that -China is huge!!! Have you been to any places in China? Are there any places in China you would like to visit?
AR: I want to experience as many places in China as possible.  The places I have been in China are Suzhou,  Nanjing,  Shanghai,  Beijing,  Zhenjiang (where I live of course)  and that’s it.  The places I would like to visit in China are Xiamen,  Harbin,  Sanya and others that I don’t know about yet.
KG: Nice. China is great. So much to see and do. Have you visited any nearby countries since you have been here? If yes, where did you go?
AR: Yes,  Singapore,  Thailand,  South Korea,  so far.
KG: What cities/countries are on your travel list?
AR: Uganda,  Vancouver, Canada,  Paris this year,  with a possible few others.
KG: What is your dream trip? Have you been there yet?
AR: Santorini Greece; I have not been there as if yet.
KG: Take me with you when you go!
Just for Kicks!
If you could meet any one person, past or present, who would it be and why?
AR: Akon-to see what it takes to build a city
KG: I just have one Last thing to ask you. If you could share one thing with everyone about life what would it be?
AR: If I could share only one thing about this amazing journey called life,  it would be to pay attention to the things you think about and feel about.  Purify it,  love it genuinely, and live it. Seek alignment,  natural,  untainted,  alignment.
KG: Alondra! Big Thanks to you for your time with this interview. I am so grateful for you sharing your experience.

Lessons From Ms. K (2) Oh NO! School Is Closed. What Do I Do???

Disclaimer: Long Post! I wanted all of this information in one place so that it’s easy to find.

Schools are closing. Parents and students are home from school and work. Churches are live streaming their services. Businesses and companies are moving to having individuals telework. COVID-19 is spreading and affecting the world. The entire world. If you are like some parents I have talked to, you are probably wondering, “WHAT AM I SUPPOSED TO DO AT HOME WITH THESE KIDS FOR 2-3 WEEKS! THESE KIDS NEED TO GO TO SCHOOL!” School is great. For some kids it is there only place of stability and routine and for many it is where two meals and a snack comes from. This is a serious issue. If you can help anyone on your block or in your community please reach out.

First, if you’re at home and you’r not sure what to do I hope the information below is helpful. It can be tough being parent and teacher. Remember to be patient and calm. Don’t overwhelm yourself.

Below you will find a wealth of websites with tons of resources, games, videos, worksheets, stories, and activities for you to do with your child while at home. Of course you should always check the sites out first and have a plan for what you want your child to do and how long you want them in front of a screen, but these sites are great!

*Some of these sites do require payment. They are not all free*

I have been at home since February of this year. I am beyond ready for life to go back to normal – whatever that is right?! I know that back at home in USA and in other parts of the world things are quickly changing. Get what you need from the store and be prepared to be at home.

Someone asked me how I can be so positive during this time. My faith has kept me positive and calm. It has helped me to not live from a place of fear, but from a place of wisdom. I have taken all safety precautions that have been given to me. I wear masks when I have to go outside, I have gloves, I carry hand-sanitizer but it is not a replacement for soap and water, I avoid touching my face, I eat well, drink lots of water, and take my vitamins daily. It will be okay. As someone who is 6 weeks in to all of this I promise you it will be okay and this too shall pass!

This epidemic is affecting individuals in very different ways. Again, I am so thankful to be healthy, safe, and doing well in Shanghai.

Surviving the Virus – Week 5 Part 1

China has taken extreme measures to get the coronavirus under control as it continues to spread around the world. And their measures are working, for China. The numbers here are slowly dropping. This virus is a pubic health epidemic and it must be taken seriously. Stricter restrictions have been placed on individuals returning to China from countries that are high risk places. Quarantine is stricter now, restaurants are taking your temperature before you enter, and you’re asked to show a health QR code that shows your healthy. Code colors are green, yellow, and red and you must have a green code to enter restaurants, malls, and businesses.

I am a person who does not live from a place of fear but does operate from a place of wisdom. I do not know if America will go on a two week quarantine like we did in China, but honestly I think its best. No one likes to be controlled or told what to do, but with all that is happening and how its spreading this is best right now (just my opinion of course). The world needs to stop traveling – I know – I know flights and hotels are super cheap right now and taking a trip sounds wonderful but….everyone needs to sit still while this gets contained.  If the world would stop moving things would calm down. The virus has already spread all over the world, but we don’t need numbers to continue to rise if they don’t have to.

Life is different for everyone in China depending on your province, city, district, your compound, and employer. Everyone is having such a different experience. I listen to people, write, talk, and share about how its been for them. For some people they have been fine and for others, its been an overwhelming exhausting experience. All I can say is do the best with what you are given.

Here are a few tips for you to prepare in case your city goes under a two week quarantine. My friend Jordania gave some tips and I added to them. Here Ya Go:

Focus on the essentials, wash your hands with warm soap and water (hope you’ve already been doing this), avoid large crowds of people when possible.

1. Stock up on pre-made dinners. Pop in the oven, heat, and eat. Or prepackaged meals. Fruits and veggies, yes. Frozen or dehydrated.
2. Board games, card games, video games, computer games- any games.
3. Streaming services (music and video). Download a few things and save them!
4. Parents subscribe to educational sites or buy some books. Do projects with your children.
5. Art craft supplies. Journals/Notebooks- writing supplies.
6. Don’t forget the pets. 🐱🐶
7. Workout videos or gear. Look up and research indoor workouts.
8. Water, water, water. The ones for the water coolers.
9. Toilet paper
10. Cleaning supplies and laundry detergent.
11. Vitamins/Medication/update your home-personal first aid kit
12. Batteries/Flashlight – solar powered ones too if you feel so inclined
13. 🍷!!! Wine – if that’s something you like

^I hope that this information is helpful. You can do as much of it, as little of it, or none of it as you like. Just sharing what I think will be beneficial if you experience two weeks at home. Two weeks not at work at home sounds great until you realize you’re unprepared, don’t have any food, and one book to read!^

Me: We are currently still e-teaching and we have no official date for when we will return back to school. I am safe, I have food, water, wifi and all the essentials. I am able to go out and do things. I am not totally bored, but definitely ready for life to go back to normal.

martin lawrence why are you here gina GIF by Martin soooooooooooooo I am working and teaching at home. Watching all of the TV Shows that make me laugh and that I enjoy! I am reading lots of books and taking naps as my schedule allows in between my video lessons with my students… life is different right now, but I am safe and healthy and for that I am truly thankful!
